The Role of Educators in Getting More Students to Study Junior Math

Although some students are naturally gifted to excel in science subjects including mathematics, others need motivation to take on these subjects, especially at higher levels of education where they are optional. Compared to art students, the number of students taking science-based disciplines is quite low. However, the world still needs scientists to guarantee continuity of the great work already being done by the current scientists. Doctors, engineers, lawyers and other professionals play a significant role in society. However, parents can help out with providing them tuition for math for JC.

Teachers are role models to students

It is critical for teachers to understand the influence they have on the lives of their students. Some students actually perform well in math because they like the teacher and how they are taught. Other students develop a negative attitude toward mathematics, either because they do not get along with the teacher or they do not understand the lesson structure. It is essential for teachers to explore ways in which they can get their students to gain interest in math.

Establish a connection between students’ interests and mathematics

One way in which teachers can influence more students to enroll in junior math is to find out what they like and how it can be integrated in math. Concepts that are considered difficult by majority of the students means that as they progress in their educations, few are willing to opt for junior college math. However, if they can relate to what they are taught, they will pass and even enjoy math in their different levels of education. For example, today’s students are so taken up by technology. Teachers should illustrate the role of mathematics in the creation of the technology they enjoy.

Show students that it is possible to excel in science subjects

One of the reasons classes holding students who take science subjects become smaller as they progress in their education is because students believe they have a better chance of passing with a higher grade in art subjects as opposed to sciences. This is an attitude many students have. However, it is possible for more students to take junior math if they are taught that passing with an excellent grade is possible. Making math lessons fun can be the motivation some of the students need. Teachers should be creative in how they introduce lessons. They should also encourage student participation.

Establish the value of math in life

Some students perform poorly in math because they have no interest in a subject they perceive will be of no use in their lives. It is essential for students to understand some of the decisions they make in life are borne from the skills they gain from their math lessons. The ability to understand and analyze situations before coming up with a solution is a life skill that will come in handy. Once students understand the gains from math, they may be more curious about the subject.

Encourage students to be creative

Math is a great subject because there are various ways a problem can be solved. Teachers need to encourage students to explore methods they are more comfortable using. This involves research, a skill that is vital in all careers. Once students have the freedom to decide what works for them, they will be more responsive to math in higher levels of learning.

Teachers need to receive regular training to help them be a positive influence to the decision taken by students, especially in the subjects they have a passion for. It is easier for students to love a subject if teachers show they have a passion for it.
